The Group

Our Story

110 years ago, Ermenegildo Zegna founded a wool mill in the Northern Italian town of Trivero. Ermenegildo had a vision to create the most beautiful fabrics in the world. His dream was not just about the fabrics the mill would produce; he also wanted to make his hometown –and the world around it– a better place, ensuring the highest quality products without compromising the quality of life for future generations. This continues to be what we stand for today.
The Ermenegildo Zegna Group has since grown into one of Italy’s best-known dynamic family businesses. The vertically integrated global company is now led by the third generation with Gildo as CEO, Paolo as Chairman, and Anna as President of Fondazione Zegna. Today, the fourth generation has entered the company and continues to innovate.
Since inception, Zegna has had an international vision. Our founder was ahead of his time. He sourced the best quality natural fibres directly from their country of origin, imported them to Italy to be expertly woven, and subsequently exported these luxury fabrics while promoting the Zegna brand worldwide. Ermenegildo’s brilliant business mind was not limited to his particular industrial field. He knew that the quality he sought for his products couldn’t be separated from a positive relationship with the local territory and the community.
Our founder understood that the beauty of the natural environment and people’s well-being and inclusion were indispensable for a company aspiring to long term success. He wanted to make his hometown, and the world around, a better place. In the 1930s he built facilities including a modernist swimming pool, school, a hospital and a road, today called Panoramica Zegna, to enrich and help the lives of people in his town. The Zegna family has kept alive the idea that product quality can only flourish when there is a “culture of beauty” behind it.
Ermenegildo Zegna also dared to launch an extensive reforestation project in the 1930s in the hills surrounding his wool mill, where he planted 500,000 conifer trees. This territory has remained an important part of Zegna’s green philosophy. Inspired by a shared love of nature, in 1993 the third generation of the family founded Oasi Zegna to conserve the environment and natural resources around Trivero. Aligned with the sustainability principles that are integral part of its Corporate Social Responsibility Policy, this is just one of the Ermenegildo Zegna Group’s land development efforts to elevate the community. The Group continues to honour its founder’s philanthropic spirt by donating 5% of net profits to charitable initiatives on a yearly basis through the Fondazione Zegna, set up in 2000.
Today, the Group has become the world leader in luxury menswear with its namesake label Ermenegildo Zegna, while acquiring specialised manufacturers and new fashion brands to accelerate its strong and profitable growth trajectory. The Group purchased silk weaving manufacturer Tessitura di Novara in 2009, Italian mill Bonotto in 2016, and leading jersey manufacturer Dondi in 2019, to become one of the most specialised companies in the Italian luxury supply chain. The Group made these acquisitions to protect and further develop Italy’s textile expertise bringing together the most luxurious fabric manufacturing and renowned Italian producton.
Looking forward to the future while respecting the past, the Group hasn’t just focused on manufacturing but on increasing its brand portfolio and global presence. Over the years, the Group has been carefully expanding its scope of activities through a series of acquisitions. These strategic ventures demonstrate a strong entrepreneurial spirit that has been passed down through generations, ensuring that the Ermenegildo Zegna Group name remains synonymous with business pioneers and a dedication to the highest quality.
